The Akari Chargers aced their first-day assignment in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference, even without the services of key starter Fifi Sharma.

Sharma, the third best blocker during the All-Filipino Conference last May, is unavailable due to her commitments to Alas Pilipinas. But Akari captain Michelle Cobb said the team has been adjusting well to the middle blocker’s absence.

“Definitely, we feel the loss of Fifi,” Cobb told the Inquirer after the Chargers shut down the Capital1 Solar Spikers, 25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14, last Thursday. “But … I’m proud that my teammates stepped up.”

“We were able to make things work during the offseason even though we were short-handed. There were some key additions to the team, which also helped fill the gaps in our roster.”

Aside from American reinforcement Oly Akaro, who delivered 16 points in her PVL debut, the Chargers also had ample support from their acquisitions from sister team Nxled.Ivy Lacsina led in scoring with a game-high 20 points, all on attacks, while returning player Camille Victoria took over Sharma’s starting role and contributed seven points and two blocks.

Cobb emphasized the importance of a balanced offense in an import-flavored conference.

“Now, almost every ball is given to the import. Coach Taka (Minowa) stresses that for Akari, it shouldn’t just be … the Oly show. He wants everyone to contribute points for the team,” Cobb said.

The Chargers will need to find the A-game quick. Akari returns to action on Tuesday against the Choco Mucho Flying Titans, who are raring to bounce back from an opening-day loss.–KARL HENRY AGBUGAY
