Brazilian foreign minister Mauro Vieira will be visiting Manila this week, marking the first visit of Brazil’s foreign minister to the Philippines in 80 years of diplomatic relations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has announced that Vieira and his delegation will be arriving on Aug. 23 for an official visit, during which they will have a bilateral meeting with Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo.

The DFA added that the meeting will include a discussion on assessing the current state of relations between the Philippines and Brazil and to “consider” opportunities to advance the relationship.

“Secretary Manalo and Minister Vieira are expected to exchange views on a range of issues, including trade and investments, technical cooperation, as well as cooperation in agriculture, defense, education, and in the multilateral arena,” the DFA said.

This follows a high-level exchange with Brazil last year during the 6th Bilateral Consultation Meeting that “intensified official engagements.”

“Minister Vieira’s visit signifies the great importance both countries attach to the bilateral relationship,” the DFA said.

Some of the agreements to be signed during Vieira’s visit involve technical cooperation, cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space, and education.
