‘My son’s wife will thank us both one day’

Avatar

Unfortunately for us, our beautiful grandmother (whom I was named after) left us in 2018 at the ripe old age of 98. Maybe it was a good thing that she didn’t have to go through the pandemic—she had been through enough in her life.

And yet, despite all the challenges, she still is the most loving and generous person I’ve ever known. She couldn’t even spend on a luxury item for herself without going through the thought process of “how many families can this feed?” She held leadership positions in several charitable organizations throughout her life and constantly helped to raise funds for impoverished and marginalized families.

So to my Lola Caring, this is what I remember most about you: that you had unwavering faith in God; that you were so devoted to helping others; and that you were the funniest person in our family. I’m pretty sure I got my sense of humor from you. Albeit that and my name are all I got, haha.

Thank you for bringing joy and laughter into our lives. You showed us what unconditional love is all about. Thank you for always putting a smile on my face. Thank you for always having an open home and an open heart. Tristan was very lucky to have experienced a bit of his life with his great-grandmother. The special love that you gave was truly a blessing.

And to my mom, Sonia—Mamita to my son Tristan—he has the fondest memories of all the times you picked him up from school to take him to lunch nearby before his afternoon classes. Thank you for being there for him when life was busy throwing me curve balls, and for everything you taught him about art, organization, cleanliness and neatness (shout-out to my fellow OC peeps!). His wife will thank us both one day, lol!

Happy Grandparents’ Day to all the wonderful grandparents out there!
