11 OFWs fly to Kuwait as deployment ban lifted
Eleven Filipino domestic workers left for Kuwait on Sept. 13 after the Philippine government ended a deployment ban due to cases of labor and physical abuses committed by Kuwaiti employers.
The 11 are among the 35 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be initially deployed to the Middle Eastern country after the lifting of the ban, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said on Monday.
Before their departure, the DMW conducted several briefings to explain the protection they were entitled to and the enhanced monitoring of their conditions on-site. “They were likewise reminded of their rights and responsibilities before deployment to their respective foreign employers,” it said.
The second batch of 24 OFWs are scheduled to leave anytime this week. After Jullebee Cabilis Ranara was killed by her employer’s son in January last year, Philippine authorities banned the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait the following month. —JACOB LAZARO
