Talk of the Town: Pruning power prices

Comment on “Pruning power prices,” (No Free Lunch by Cielito F. Habito) via https://opinion.inquirer.net:

Ah yes, the grand idea of giving NGCP and these other companies 25 more years to figure out how to not run the power grid like a bunch of amateurs playing Monopoly. Brilliant! Instead of putting up with their endless delays and excuses, why not open the gates and let some real competition in—foreign competition, to be precise. Let’s be honest, some countries have already cracked the code on this: bring in the big players, let them duke it out, and watch the prices for consumers drop like a hot potato. Look at Singapore and Japan—they’ve opened up their electricity markets to foreign competitors, and guess what happened? Consumers got to choose where their power came from, and prices started to tumble. In Australia, competition helped drive down electricity costs, too. So why are we stuck here, watching this circus? If you’re still asking how to lower the cost of power in the Philippines, let me break it to you: you’re the problem. Stop dragging your feet and let the market open up.
