Toyota Corolla Cross H2 Concept pioneers clean hydrogen mobility in the Philippines

At the 2024 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) unveiled its ambitious “Beyond Zero” campaign, aiming to redefine sustainability in the automotive sector.

Central to this vision is the potential of hydrogen fuel technology, exemplified by the Corolla Cross H2 Concept prototype vehicle, which promises to lead the charge toward clean mobility in the near future.

The Corolla Cross H2 Concept stands at the forefront of TMP’s hydrogen initiative, powered by a hydrogen-fueled internal-combustion engine. The drivetrain was developed by the carmaker’s GAZOO Racing motorsport division in various endurance races in Japan.

This prototype was introduced at a side event during the motor show weekend, where select attendees also witnessed a live demonstration of hydrogen fueling infrastructure imported from Malaysia. The Corolla Cross H2 Concept illustrates Toyota’s commitment to exploring diverse fuel sources as part of its broader sustainability strategy.

Why hydrogen?

Hydrogen technology offers a unique advantage, particularly in sectors that are challenging to electrify.

It serves as a clean energy carrier, producing only water vapor as a by-product when combusted. This makes hydrogen a compelling option for heavy-duty transport and industries that demand significant energy output without contributing to carbon emissions.

Hydrogen fuel can be produced in huge commercial quantities in markets and locations that are geographically advantageous. It can also be shipped conventionally and safely through sea and land routes.

Instead of using fuel cells and an electric engine, the Corolla Cross H2 Concept uses Hydrogen.

As part of its hydrogen ecosystem, TMP collaborates with Hydrexia, a leading supplier of hydrogen fuel solutions. Hydrexia’s expertise in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution is crucial for developing a robust fueling infrastructure in the Philippines.

By leveraging advanced hydrogen storage technologies, Hydrexia is positioned to support TMP’s vision of making hydrogen a viable and accessible energy source for consumers.

Diverse options

Toyota’s “Beyond Zero” initiative embodies a multi-pathway approach to achieving carbon neutrality, with TMP recognizing that there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution when it comes to energy and vehicle technologies.

TMP corporate affairs group first vice president Josephine Villanueva stressed the importance of a strategic roadmap for electrified-vehicle adoption in the Philippines, aiming for 50-percent market penetration by 2040.
