Nearly 5,000 new mangrove propagules now thrive along the coastline of Cebu City, all thanks to the effort of Shang Properties Inc. (SPI) that underscored its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

SPI subsidiary Shang Properties Realty Corp. employees planted 4,846 mangrove propagules along the South Road Properties (SRP) coastline, alternatively known as South Reclamation Project. It is a 300-ha piece of real estate reclaimed from Mactan Channel.

The initiative was organized in partnership with Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office, the city’s environmental management and protection agency.

Important habitat

Mangrove forests provide a wide range of benefits to people and the planet. Their roots are an important habitat for marine life, while other parts can host birds, amphibians, mammals and reptiles. At the same time, they sequester carbon, mitigate coastal soil erosion and stand as barriers against strong waves and winds.

Despite their important contributions, mangrove areas in the Philippines are severely decreased. The Climate Change Commission noted that mangrove forests covered 450,000 ha in 1920. In 2019, these are estimated to be at 227,808 ha.

Broader efforts

Understanding the significance of environmental advocacy and action, SPI has launched a broader reforestation effort.

It had organized other events before the Nov. 16 event. On Oct. 26, 2024, SPI employees planted 4,930 mangrove propagules, kicking off the company’s longtime commitment to restoring Cebu’s coastal environment. On Nov. 9, it also planted 450 native saplings.

With the three events, SPI has planted 41 percent of its goal of 24,887 trees.

SPI has incorporated environmental preservation into its development approach, ensuring that the company’s growth aligns with practices that reflect a strong commitment to the environment.

Shang Bauhinia Residences

The renowned luxury property developer set its sights on environmental work in Cebu City just weeks after officially launching Shang Bauhinia Residences there. Shang Bauhinia, rising along Bauhinia Drive in Banilad district, is SPI’s first foray into Cebu City.

With this offering, SPI seeks to transform the Cebu City skyline and enhance Cebuanos’ lifestyle. Shang Bauhinia Residences will be a towering presence in the city with a height of 52 stories, but its aesthetic value will also be unmissable with SPI enlisting the expertise of Hong Kong-based P&T Group, Italian firm FM Architettura and the Philippines Casas + Architects for the project’s design direction.
