Globe, GoTyme team up to boost cybersecurity

Globe Telecom Inc. and GoTyme Bank are teaming up for data-sharing initiatives in a bid to strengthen defenses against scams that can result in financial losses to victims.

In a statement on Monday, the parties announced they had signed an agreement to share information about mobile numbers—along with names and addresses—potentially linked to fraudulent activities.

The parties will only share necessary information in compliance with the Data Privacy Act.

The agreement shortens the period for investigating suspected scammers as it will eliminate the need for warrant or subpoena to obtain their information.

“This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to championing cybersecurity and protecting our customers from the growing threats in the digital world. Through collaborations, we can combine our expertise and resources to better safeguard the financial sector and our customers from cybercrime,” Globe chief privacy officer Irish Salandanan-Almeida said.

Prior to this, Globe sealed partnerships with the Bankers of Association of the Philippines and its member banks to fight fraud.

In the first half of last year, the telco giant reported that it had blocked 2.7 million bank-related spam and scam messages.

Globe has allocated about $20 million in scam detection and blocking systems to shield consumers from fraudulent messages.

According to a study by Kaspersky, Filipinos dealt with 14.1 million web threats last year, showing a decline from 26.6 million in 2023.

Yeo Siang Tiong, Kaspersky general manager for Southeast Asia, said the “perceived decreases” in cyber threats could be attributed to better detection and prevention of these digital attacks.

However, Yeo said this could also mean that hackers were focusing their efforts on “specific high-value targets” instead of doing mass cyberattacks.
