16-MW energy storage hub breaks ground in Isabela

Renewable energy firm SN Aboitiz Power Group (SNAP) has begun construction works for the second phase of its battery energy storage system (BESS) in Isabela province.

The firm said it had broken ground for the planned 16-megawatt (MW) facility located at the Magat hydroelectric power plant on Thursday.

The expansion was pursued more than a year after the initial 24-MW had gone up and running.

SNAP said the 40-MW BESS facility would provide ancillary services to boost grid reliability.

Players in the power sector, especially those operating renewable sources, have been complementing their facilities with BESS given the intermittency of clean energy sources in producing electricity. BESS allows renewable energy developers to store power during peak hours, and then deploy them when the grid network requires more capacity.

Another project SNAP is gearing up for is the 40-MW BESS facility at the Binga hydroelectric power plant in Itogon, Benguet.

Earlier this week, the group said it had secured loan deals with the Bank of the Philippine Islands, China Banking Corp. and Banco de Oro Unibank, Inc. for its BESS projects.

The projects are poised for completion by the first half of 2026.

“These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing innovative and sustainable energy solutions,” said Joseph Yu, president and chief executive officer of SNAP.

“With the additional 56 MW of BESS projects across our plants and the launch of our integrated remote operations center, we are not only increasing the energy supply but also enhancing energy security and grid stability, in line with our long-term sustainability goals,” the official added.

SNAP is a joint venture between Aboitiz Power and Norway’s Scatec.
