Soon, BI will introduce system to screen arriving passengers in advance

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) plans to launch a globally renowned system that allows for screening of passengers in advance, enabling authorities to detect potential security threats and streamline entry procedures before arrival.

The BI announced on Monday that pilot testing is already underway with major airlines, including Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Cebu Pacific, in collaboration with their service providers.

The Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) is expected to go live within the month, the BI added.

APIS, a widely adopted system used by countries worldwide, allows authorities to pre-screen passengers, which enhances security measures and facilitates seamless travel.

“This system will enable us to screen passengers in advance, improving risk assessment and expediting the processing of legitimate travelers,” said BI Deputy Spokesperson Melvin Mabulac.

According to BI, the connectivity tests with Interpol’s I-24/7 database have been completed successfully, leading to enhanced monitoring of international security watchlists.

The bureau further noted that it is actively working with key stakeholders, including Interpol, airline representatives and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, to ensure the smooth integration of APIS with existing immigration systems.

“This initiative marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to modernize immigration processes,” said Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.

“With APIS, we are not only strengthening security but also ensuring a more efficient and hassle-free experience for travelers,” he added.
