A look at leisure homes

Ar. Vittoria Mawis-Aliston

Today, a house is no longer just a place for sleeping. It has evolved into a place for working, for creating, and for following our various passions.

In some cases, it has even become a place for leisure, where we can just kick back, relax and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

When did a house evolve into a place that offers the ultimate escape? Why has it become essential for us to find a respite we can call our own? Today, let us explore the rising popularity of leisure homes.

A hot commodity

Leisure homes or vacation homes are often located in popular destinations and characterized by great amenities. They usually attract families who love owning their personal oasis or investors who are keen on accommodating tourists.

While the idea of vacation homes is not a new concept, the recent rise for its growing demand can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. When travel and leisure were limited during the pandemic, many of us yearned to visit places where we can escape our daily stresses. So when the quarantines were finally lifted, those who were able to, jumped at the opportunity to own their personal places of escape.

More often than not, leisure homes belong to the upper-income bracket of the real estate market.

While these sometimes mean a hefty price tag, they are also less affected by fluctuating market performances and high interest rates compared to more affordable homes. They are great investments as they can easily be rented out to tourists due to their exceptional locations.

As private residences, they are also desirable because they provide owners the blissful experience of living in a relaxing environment all year round.

Unique experiences

Leisure homes differ in typology and offerings.

They can be condotel units, bungalow homes or even private villas. What binds these different building types, however, is the unique experiences that they offer.

Whether they are situated on a beach or on a mountaintop, these homes give you a place to recharge. Coupled with amenities such as swimming pools, fitness centers and playgrounds, you’ll surely enjoy every moment living at home.

Here in the Philippines, popular locations of leisure homes are places like Baguio, Batangas, Cebu and other classic travel destinations. Cities like Pasay and Las Piñas, however, have also become home to many condotels because of the presence of casinos and entertainment venues.

Essentially, the battle among these places boils down to the amenities being offered.

Leisure sites feature exceptional amenities and surroundings.

Thrilling amenities

Unlike traditional residences, leisure homes are prized for their memorable offerings.

A beach house for example, might offer a yacht club, a private beachfront, or a butler service. A mountaintop condominium, meanwhile, may feature hot tubs, fire pits, and heated pools. The amenities are chosen and designed to suit their environments, ensuring that guests and residents get maximum comfort and fun.

While comparable to resorts, leisure homes offer privacy. If you opt to rent or own your place of escape, you don’t have to share it with others.

This concept has become very important in the wake of the pandemic. It has also helped boost local economies as they encourage more people to invest in developing areas with natural and enjoyable offerings.

Homes next to golf courses also qualify as leisure homes.

A tourism booster

By deciding to invest in a leisure home, you are also helping boost local economies. When more people choose to live in a rising destination, big-name developers are encouraged to build more to meet the market demand. This translates to more jobs for locals and more improvements in terms of infrastructure, services and utilities.

While some may argue that the rise of modern homes in natural sites may lead to the degradation of the environment, there is an increasing awareness in sustainable practices and green design.

New policies in construction ensure that natural surroundings and heritage sites remain protected amidst construction works. The challenge remains with developers to ensure a balance between modern offerings and natural features.

Leisure homes offer a private place of respite and relaxation.

A personal piece of paradise

Beyond serving our primary needs, the home has become a place where we can find solace, escape and comfort with the people we love. Leisure homes, however, take things up a notch because they improve our experiences and provide us opportunities to experience life to the fullest.

If you’re looking to own your private place of escape, do consider investing in a leisure home. Whether you’re planning to rent it out as a business or enjoy it as a personal asset, you’ll enjoy many perks in the long run. From condotels to resort villages, seek respite in real estate today.
