Aboitiz starts building 48-MW battery system in Agusan del Norte
Aboitiz Power Corp. has begun building its 48-megawatt (MW) hybrid energy storage system to complement its oil-fired power plant in Agusan del Norte.
The company said its subsidiary Therma Marine Inc. (TMI) had broken ground for the Nasipit power storage facility on Monday, with the commercial operations targeted for the second quarter of 2026.
The battery backup system would be linked to TMI Mobile 2, Aboitiz Power said.
The firm, however, declined to disclose the project cost as it is slated to join future competitive bidding.
“Once completed, the Nasipit BESS project will help enable more grid stability and support the growing share of renewable energy in our grid. It’s a smart solution for a smarter energy landscape,” AboitizPower Transition Business Group chief operating officer for operated assets Ronaldo Ramos said in a press statement on Tuesday.
Battery energy storage system or BESS has been gaining traction among power producers, especially those involved in renewables, as it can store excess electricity and then release it during peak hours to prop up supply.
Aboitiz Power also deployed a hybrid BESS for its TMI Mobile 1 oil-fired power facility in Maco, Davao de Oro. The technology, it noted, was “a first in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia in a floating platform.”
“These oil-fired power plants, coupled with the BESS technology, play a crucial role in providing fast, responsive power to help balance supply and demand in the grid as an ancillary service,” it said.
Tapping ancillary services is necessary to ensure uninterrupted electricity delivery.
The group is engaged in power generation, power distribution, retail electricity services and distributed energy. Its power generation portfolio includes both renewable and nonrenewable generation plants.
It earlier unveiled the plan to expand its clean energy portfolio to 4,600 MW by 2030.
Aboitiz Power recorded a 5-percent increase in its core net income last year, hitting P33.7 billion, on the back of higher generation portfolio margins and stronger energy sales.
