Globe joins consortium to build AUG East subsea cable

Globe Telecom has teamed up with a group of major telcos and technology firms to build a new undersea cable system to support data-hungry businesses.
In a statement over the weekend, the telco giant said the consortium will fund the Asia United Gateway East (AUG East) submarine cable system.
This project is aimed at meeting the rising demand for “high-speed, high-capacity connectivity” that is crucial for the use of artificial intelligence.
Aside from Globe, the consortium that is led by Singapore’s Singtel includes Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Arteria Networks, Chunghwa Telecom, Dreamline, Telekom Malaysia and Unified National Networks.
The new subsea network will link Singapore and Japan, with landing points in the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan.
The facility is intended to be completed by the third quarter of 2029.
The investment for the 8,900-kilometer cable project, however, was not disclosed.
“This new data superhighway strengthens our nation’s digital backbone,” said Carl Cruz, president and chief executive officer of Globe.
“It gives businesses the scale, speed, and reliability they need to compete globally and embrace technologies that can uplift lives and drive inclusive progress for all Filipinos,” said Cruz.
Raymond Policarpio, vice president of Globe Business, said the group’s move to join the consortium is part of its “long-term strategy to future-proof the Philippines’ digital infrastructure.”
“By securing our stake in this vital digital thoroughfare, we are proactively enabling our enterprise clients to leverage cutting-edge technologies, drive innovation, and expand their global reach, ensuring the Philippines remains a competitive hub in the digital economy,” Policarpio said. He also serves as head of strategy management and business investments at Globe.
The Ayala-backed telco has been pouring billions of pesos into its network across the country. In the first quarter of 2025, Globe spent P8.5 billion for expansion, including the deployment of new 5G sites.
For this year, Globe intends to invest below $1 billion.
