Brat wedding energy: Charli XCX just got married—her way

Like in the lyrics of her 2024 album “Brat” song “Everything is romantic,” Charli XCX is “falling in love again and again.”

Known for her genre-bending, high-octane sound and electric—often chaotic—stage presence, 32-year-old British pop trailblazer Charli XCX exchanged vows with George Daniel, drummer of The 1975, over the weekend in a small, low-key ceremony in London.

After dating for three years, the nuptials marked a tender, personal moment for the celebrated artist—diverging from her often larger-than-life public persona.

Cool girls do it their own way

In a simple city hall ceremony at the Hackney Town Hall in East London, the couple tied the knot on July 19—unbeknownst to many. Charli XCX (real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison) and Daniel were surrounded by close friends and family, including the groom’s bandmates.

Charli XCX only released photos to the public on Instagram last Saturday with the simple caption “did something <3.” True to her too-cool-to-care style, the bride opted for a satiny, off-shoulder Nova Cora Mini dress by Vivienne Westwood. She donned her distinct, big black sunglasses and wore her dark tresses down under a classic tulle veil. And she even waved around an unstructured bouquet that appeared messy on purpose, with relatively common flowers like daisies and pom-pom chrysanthemums spilling over.

Meanwhile, the groom wore a double-breasted navy blazer with flared pants. The photo carousel summarized how the wedding’s energy was sans fanfare—including a shot of Daniel enjoying a cigarette and the couple sharing a kiss outside the city hall.

Charli XCX and Daniel announced their engagement in November 2023 and have been collaborating on projects since, with Daniel as an active co-producer for the iconic “Brat” album in 2024.

While the London ceremony served as the official “I do,” whispers suggest that the celebration isn’t entirely over, as reports indicate that Charli XCX and Daniel are planning a grander, more star-studded gathering in Sicily later this year.

But for now, in this small wedding ceremony with their nearest and dearest, Charli XCX once again proved that cool girls do it their own way.
