Senior moment: Be an Intramuros tour guide

Are you a senior citizen living in Manila and still fit as a fiddle? The Department of Tourism (DOT) wants you to be one of its tour guides in the Walled City.
The DOT, together with the National Commission of Senior Citizens, has launched a livelihood program for seniors at least 60 years of age and still in the pink of health, who are interested to become accredited community tour guides for one week at the historic Manila district of Intramuros.
The program, with limited slots for only 30 senior citizens, runs Sept. 23 to Oct. 1.
Applicants will be screened on the following qualifications: a resident of the city of Manila, physically fit, 60 years old and up, and able to speak in English.
Requirements include an application form available from official DOT social media platforms, curriculum vitae, a copy of the applicant’s senior ID from the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs, and a 2×2 ID photo.
These will have to be submitted on the application cut-off date of Aug. 25 to the NCSC email, secadna@ncsc.gov.ph.
Seminar, profiling
Those selected will have a free tour guiding seminar as well as history lessons on Intramuros, the DOT said. They will also have to undergo a “profiling session” with the agency.
Intramuros, the original 16th-century walled city of Manila built by Spanish conquistadors, hosts major tourist attractions such as the San Agustin Church, a Unesco world heritage site; the Manila Cathedral, Fort Santiago, Baluarte de San Diego, Museo de Intramuros, Casa Manila Museum, Plaza San Luis, and Plaza de Roma.
Based on the latest data from the Intramuros Administration, some 4.29 million tourists visited the Walled City in 2023.
