DOT calls for ‘swift, thorough’ probe of killing of 2 Japanese in Manila

The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Tuesday urged authorities to conduct a “swift and thorough” investigation of the Aug. 15 killing of two Japanese nationals in Manila.
“We note with deep concern that recent events have already prompted advisories from foreign embassies in the country’s top visitor source markets, which could adversely affect tourist confidence and the Philippines’ image as a safe and welcoming destination,” it said in a statement.
It called on the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police to investigate the incident, as it stressed the importance of proactive security measures in boosting tourism.
“Tourism, a vital pillar of livelihood for millions of Filipinos, heavily depends on creating and maintaining conditions of peace, safety, and security,” the DOT said.
On Monday, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso said the city government was coordinating with the PNP to identify the people behind the “barbaric” killing and ensure the safety of residents and tourists in the city.
The Inquirer asked the DOT to name the foreign consular offices or embassies that have updated their travel advisories following the incident, but as of posting time, it has yet to receive a response.
No advisory yet
The Japanese Embassy in Manila, however, said that it has not yet cautioned its citizens against traveling to the Philippines.
“At this moment, we have not updated the travel advisory. We notified the Japanese community in the Philippines of the incident and raised their awareness for the security,” it said in a statement sent to the Inquirer.
Based on police accounts obtained by the Japanese Embassy, a masked man fatally shot the two unnamed Japanese nationals on Malvar Street in Malate, a known red-light district in Manila, around 10:40 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The victims were alighting from a taxi when they were approached by a man who shot them. The gunman, who was accompanied by a motorcycle-riding man nearby, then took the victims’ belongings before fleeing.
“The motive and background of the incident are still unknown as authorities are still investigating, but we ask that all Japanese residents, tourists, and business travelers in the country continue to take great care to ensure their safety,” the Japanese Embassy said.
It also refused to identify the victims as the investigation is still ongoing, saying only that it has extended support to their families.
