BIZ BUZZ: Manila Pen makes luxury sustainable

The Peninsula Manila has tapped MPower — the local retail electricity supplier of Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) — to energize the iconic five-star hotel in Makati City with renewable energy.
This makes Manila Pen the second property in Southeast Asia, and the fourth globally, within the hospitality giant’s portfolio to transition to renewables.
This local site of Peninsula Hotels, owned and operated by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Ltd., is pursuing a long-term sustainability strategy dubbed “Sustainability Luxury Vision 2030.” This entails proactive efforts in future-proofing its operations, such as turning to renewable sources for their electricity supply.
Kevin Tsang, managing director of Manila Pen, says that by connecting with partners like MPower, they are enabling cleaner, more efficient energy solutions that reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
“Our partnership serves as a benchmark for responsible business practices and inspires others to pursue a greener world for our future generations,” Tsang says.
Redel Domingo, head of MPower, says that the retailer being tapped for Manila Pen’s transition to renewables marks how their long-running collaboration has progressed.
“Our more than a decade of partnership stands as a testament to shared vision and service excellence,” Domingo says.
Manila Pen’s sustainability strategy, which was launched in 2021, also covers other natural resources that are diminishing — water and food. We are intrigued about how this part of the campaign would play out.
