BIZ BUZZ: Wick back at work

Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso, president and general manager of the Government Service Insurance System, will be going back to work today.

This, after the Ombudsman lifted last week the suspension of Veloso and other GSIS officials, who had to relinquish their posts last July due to their alleged involvement in supposedly questionable stock investment decisions.

Veloso is eager to go back to the office and will begin the day by leading the flag ceremony, which he has religiously attended from the time he was appointed to the post in 2022.

This is not to say, however, that everybody at GSIS will be happy to see him back at the helm of the state pension fund.

After all, it was an unnamed complainant who had reported to the Ombdusman Veloso et al’s stock investment decisions deemed to have put the fund’s resources at risk, charges that Veloso had consistently denied.

It is highly likely that the complainant is still there at the GSIS and indeed in a position to make things uncomfortable for Veloso.

Nevertheless, Veloso is not about to let those fears affect him as he goes about fulfilling the mandate to keep the pension fund in optimum financial condition for the benefit of its current and future members.

Let the test of wills begin.
