Celebrities join mass action

Celebrities and entertainers took part in Sunday’s mass action against corruption in government, adding wit, color and fun to an otherwise serious occasion for protest.

At the Edsa People Power Monument, comedian and veteran host Vice Ganda urged Congress to pass a law that would impose capital punishment, or the death penalty, on corrupt politicians.

“Because a politician who is also a thief is far more evil than a murderer and corruption is far graver than terrorism,” she said. “Because terrorists only choose who to attack, but corrupt politicians? They choose no one.”

The comedian also dared President Marcos to hold all corrupt politicians accountable by sending them behind bars “if [he wants] to leave a good legacy.”

Vice Ganda earlier joined a march together with her partner Ion Perez and other celebrities including Anne Curtis, Iza Calzado, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, Donny Pangilinan and Darren Espanto.

‘Congressman Bayaw’

At the Luneta rally, performances included comedian and filmmaker Jun Sabayton, who entered the stage as a corrupt-politician character, “Congressman Bayaw.”

“Truthfully, I don’t understand why you are so angry over corruption, because I only do this for my family, relatives, friends, neighbors, and everyone who is close to me,” Congressman Bayaw said.

“As they say, don’t hate the player, hate the game,” he said. “Is it my fault that you voted me into this position so I can trick you?”

On a serious note, Sabayton expressed support for the rally.

“Even if they keep drowning us with lies, even if we are flooded, we will flood them back with our voices and protests,” he said.
