2 Taiwanese caught trying to traffick 6 Filipinos

Gabryelle Dumalag

Police arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) Terminal 3 two Taiwanese nationals who were escorting six Filipinos bound for supposed jobs in Cambodia, the Philippine National Police said on Thursday.

The PNP Women and Children Protection Center (WCPC) said the victims—two women and four men between 26 and 29 years old—were recruited through social media and promised jobs in Cambodia with a monthly salary of $1,000.

But investigators found they were being trafficked to work as online scammers. The police operation was conducted in coordination with the Department of Migrant Workers and other partner agencies.

The two Taiwanese who are currently being held by the police face charges of trafficking in persons under Republic Act No. 9208 and syndicated and large-scale illegal recruitment.
