Larga gets going with 10,000 cyclists expected

Cycling takes center stage again as Larga Pilipinas, backed by Smart Communications, stages a two-day, two-stage race for an expected 10,000 cyclists on Nov. 29 and Nov. 30 in Nampicuan, Nueva Ecija.
The event, free of charge and open to all, follows previous editions in Marikina, Guimba and Palayan. Organizer Larga Pilipinas hopes to reignite grassroots enthusiasm for the sport.
Originally planned as a mountain race in the Cordilleras, the “Race to the Northern Alps” was pushed to 2025 due to La Niña forecasts and frequent rainfall. Instead, this year’s edition will feature a flatland and highland route that promises both challenge and accessibility.
“Just like before, we want to keep it free because we believe that’s how we can grow cycling again,” said organizer Snow Badua, referencing the now-defunct Marlboro Tour, once Asia’s biggest cycling race.
The race will include 13 categories, with the Men’s Pro/Elite race serving as the main draw. Stage 1 covers 136 kilometers, looping from Nampicuan through Tarlac and Pangasinan. Stage 2, on Nov. 30, sends riders on a tough climb to Sitio Baag Highlands in San Jose, Tarlac.
For recreational and amateur cyclists, the People’s Race offers multiple divisions—Men’s and Women’s age-group categories, MTB, Fixed Gear, and the crowd-favorite Phat Boyz for riders 90kg and above. Their Stage 1 covers 106 kilometers, also starting and ending in Nampicuan.
A Fun Ride option is also available for those looking for a more relaxed experience.
Support from sponsors like Smart Sports, Yamaha Motor Philippines, Go for Gold and NLEx-SCTEx ensures the event is more than just a race. Yamaha will raffle off several PG-1 motorcycles to participants, adding extra excitement to the weekend.
Despite modest funding, organizers aim to make the event grand, with full media coverage and a professionalized setup to inspire more Filipinos to get on bikes.
