Honda 0 a concept EV makes global debut at JMS 2025

TOKYO — Honda Motor Company unveiled the latest addition to its 0 lineup at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show (JMS) here at the Tokyo Big Sight.

The 0 a (Zero Alpha) concept crossover serves as the entry-level model to its new battery-electric vehicle (EV) lineup, which already includes the flagship 0 Saloon and the 0 SUV concept cars. This is in line with the Japanese carmaker’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, along with meeting the growing global demand for EVs.

“Honda 0 Series is the next-generation series of EVs that Honda will offer by going back to the starting point of Honda as an automaker and creating new EVs from ‘zero’ based on original ideas,” said Honda Motor Company director, president and representative Toshihiro Mibe in a speech.

“With the unique development approach of ‘Thin, Light, and Wise,’ Honda 0 Series will defy existing conventions that EVs are ‘thick and heavy’ and create completely new value,” he added.

The next HR-V?

The 0 a is the smallest of the trio and looks similar to a futuristic HR-V subcompact crossover.

Up front, the headlights, charging lid and illuminated emblem are integrated into one screen area. Meanwhile, the prominent lower bumper includes gloss-black trim for a more premium finish.

Down the side, the upward-sweeping beltline and the hidden rear door handles are once again reminiscent of the HR-V, while gloss-black paint is used on the roof, pillars, fenders and lower doors.

Something unique to the 0 series is the lack of a rear-quarter window, which accentuates the flat tailgate. The U-shaped taillights combine the brake lamps, backup lamps and turn-signal lamps, while accentuating the contour of the rear screen area that is added in lieu of a windscreen.

“Featuring a sleek and sophisticated design unique to Honda 0 Series and original proportions that express the dynamic nature of SUVs, the Honda 0 α will blend beautifully with both urban and natural environments, supporting people’s lives in every situation,” Mibe said.

Thin, tech-filled cabin

Although the interior of the 0 a was not shown to the public, Honda Motor Company said space was maximized through innovative design.

“By applying packaging design based on the ‘Thin’ approach, styling with a low vehicle height was achieved without compromising ground clearance, creating a thin cabin that still offers a spacious and comfortable space for occupants,” Mibe said.

All Honda 0 models likewise feature ASIMO OS, the original Honda vehicle operating system (OS), which the company said will enable continuous advancement of various functions even after the purchase of the vehicle.

“So, the more the customer uses it, the more personalized the car becomes to offer ‘ultra-personal optimization’ of the customer’s mobility experience,” Mibe said.

Meanwhile, Honda 0 a product specialist Toshikazu Hirose said the company is also looking into launching the EV in ASEAN markets.

“It’s under study now,” he told reporters at the sidelines of JMS 2025.

“It’s currently right-hand drive and that’s why we are developing left-hand drive to go into the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam,” Hirose added.
