Talk of the Town: ‘Quezon,’ ‘Heneral Luna’
Comments on ”‘Quezon,’ ‘Heneral Luna,’ and the middle class,” (Horizons by Richard Heydarian, 11/11/25) via https://opinion.inquirer.net:
If anything, surveys show that the most reliable base of support for liberal- progressive candidates such as Leni Robredo, Mar Roxas, and Francis Pangilinan [tends] to come from Class “E,” the most marginalized sector. True. That overturns the “bobotante” trope that ignorant voters come exclusively from the lower classes. Just think of the many high-end SUVs with the clenched fist sticker and Du30 written underneath, on the road.

How about “our supposedly functionally literate middle class is not so politically literate?” Heneral Luna’s question answered this: “Bayan o sarili?” Most Filipinos value their family (number one) and self, more than even faith (God); love of country is only 14th in the top 19 values according to a survey by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA, 2020 A Primer). That should explain why corrupt political families/ dynasties have taken over most of local and national government.
