Que, Mondilla set pace at Valley after 67s

Musong R. Castillo

Hunting a first-ever Order of Merit title in the PGT, Angelo Que gunned down six birdies while Clyde Mondilla sputtered late, and the former Philippine Open champions on Tuesday opened up with five-under-par 67s to jointly set the pace in the ICTSI Valley Golf Challenge at the South course in Antipolo.

Que opened up with two straight birds, before playing his last 12 holes at four-under, while Mondilla was working on a seven-under card entering the eighth, his 17th hole and three-putting the last two greens that dropped him in the company of Que as they lead a three-man group by two shots.

“This course has been one of my favorites since my jungolf days. I like the challenge here,” the 46-year-old Que, who has two wins this year and is looking to close out the season with another, said. “You need to know where to miss, how to position your shots, and when to be aggressive or when not to be.”

First win

Mondilla was hot with an eagle-spiked card, only to be befuddled in his last two holes for the last two of his three bogeys as he hunts down a first win for the year.

“I hit it well, only to have miscues on the last two greens,” Mondilla, sporting a newly dyed hair-do, said in Filipino. “I really expected to be up there. I want to win to end the season.”

Jonel Ababa, Carl Corpuz and South Korea’s Ha Tae-won submitted 69s, while Albin Engino and Anthony Fernando will start the second round three shots adrift.
