Why you should try a Russian manicure this holiday season

The holidays arrive with a calendar full of gatherings—family dinners, year-end parties, and countless photo ops. It’s the season when polished hands become part of the look you carry from one celebration to the next. Enter the Russian manicure. Renowned for its precision, clean lines, and almost editorial finish, it provides a look that lasts long after the festivities end.

Though it’s less commonly known and a bit pricier than standard options, this holiday season is the perfect time to splurge and explore.

Why it’s worth a try

Despite its name, a Russian manicure isn’t about a specific look. Unlike a French manicure, which is defined by its signature white tips, the Russian manicure is all about technique—how your nails and cuticles are carefully prepared for a flawless finish.

Often referred to as a “dry manicure,” this method skips the traditional soak. Instead, a skilled nail technician uses an electric file and specialized tools like scissors to gently buff away dead skin and clean up the cuticles, leaving your nail beds immaculate.

So why should you consider a Russian manicure this holiday season? The biggest selling point is longevity. A Russian manicure can last for two to six weeks, depending on your nail growth—far longer than your typical manicure.

This durability comes from the way the product is removed and reapplied. Unlike conventional manicures, which rely on soaking your nails in acetone or other liquids that can dehydrate and weaken them, the Russian manicure minimizes this damage, helping nails grow stronger and also reducing the risk of splitting.

How it works

Technicians file down about 95 percent of the existing gel using a nail drill. If there’s no lifting or chipping, a thin protective layer—around five percent—is left on the nail plate. This remaining layer acts as a strong foundation. Structure gel is then applied on top, following the same meticulous cuticle-cleaning process.

The result is stronger, healthier nails that are less prone to breaking or peeling, with polish that clings perfectly and grows out gracefully. No more worrying about chips after a week or struggling to keep your nails holiday-ready through back-to-back parties.

What to know before you book

Despite its popularity, the Russian manicure remains controversial within the nail and dermatology communities. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Jing Liu argues that cuticle removal can compromise the skin’s natural protective barrier, potentially increasing the risk of infection if done improperly. Concerns have also been raised about the use of electric files on living tissue, particularly when performed by undertrained technicians or in salons with poor sanitation practices.

That said, choosing the right technician is crucial. Look for professionals with advanced training in dry or Russian manicure techniques, and prioritize salons with strict hygiene protocols. This is not a service suited for shortcuts or DIY attempts.

Communication also matters. A skilled technician will assess your nail condition and tailor the approach accordingly. If you have sensitive skin, brittle nails, or a history of infections, it’s important to disclose this beforehand.
