Bacolod fire destroys 26 houses, leaves 50 homeless
BACOLOD CITY—A predawn fire destroyed 26 houses and left 50 residents homeless in Purok Tahong, Barangay 2 in Bacolod City on Friday.
The fire that struck past 2 a.m. quickly spread because the houses were made of light materials, according to Fire Officer 2 Rolin Paulan, chief investigator of the Bacolod City Fire Station.
The displaced individuals from 20 families were now being sheltered by the city government and provided with food packs and hygiene kits, said Richelle Verdeprado, Bacolod Department of Social Services and Development head.
Investigators reported that the fire started in the house of Marcelino Pitogo, rented by a certain Gerald Nessia. Residents suspected the fire started from a candle because there was no electricity in the house where the fire started.
However, the Bacolod Fire Station said it was still determining the cause of the fire.
