Palace won’t meddle in possible new impeach complaint vs VP
President Marcos will not interfere should a new impeachment complaint be filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, as it is Congress that has jurisdiction over the matter, Palace press officer Claire Castro said on Tuesday.
ACT Teachers party list Rep. Antonio Tinio had said in a TV interview that members of the Makabayan bloc were ready to endorse a new impeachment complaint against Duterte once the one-year ban imposed by the Supreme Court expires next month.
“Whatever happens regarding impeachment, that is within the jurisdiction of Congress and if anyone should file such a case, our President will not meddle,” Castro added.
“But we will once again say this: the President wants those who should be held accountable to be held accountable,” she said.
In December 2024, four impeachment complaints were filed against Duterte.
In February last year, Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives after over 200 lawmakers voted to endorse a fourth complaint against her.
The complaint stemmed mostly from the inquiry conducted by the House good government and public accountability into the use of confidential funds by the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education when Duterte was its secretary.
In August, the Senate voted 19-4, with one abstention, to archive the impeachment articles after the Supreme Court ruled on July 25 that the complaint was unconstitutional.
The high tribunal, however, said it was not absolving Duterte of any of the charges against her. It added that any subsequent impeachment complaint may be filed only starting on Feb. 6.
