$.5-M golf tourney penciled next month
The first of two big international professional golf events gets off the ground next month at historic Wack Wack East when a crack Asian Tour field chases the first Philippine President’s Cup title.
Organizers are awaiting confirmation from the best in the region, counting the Philippines’ own Miguel Tabuena, who ruled the International Series at Sta. Elena last October and would, should he sign up, be considered as one of the favorites in the 72-hole, $500,000 championship.
The PH President’s Cup is an undertaking of the Philippine Sports Commission under Chair Pato Gregorio in an effort to promote sports tourism in the country and sponsoring an international golf event seemed to be a no-brainer considering the success of the IS leg at Sta. Elena.
“We want the golfing world to continue coming to outrcountry and see the beauty of it through our golf tournaments,” Gregorio told the Inquirer after the launch of the event on Monday afternoon at Manila Golf. “This is just to say that our country is a great golf destination and great sports destination.”
The event was conceptualized just a few weeks back and is just an addition to the Asian Tour calendar.
