Vintage pieces and flea markets: Unusual finds can upgrade your home

IDr. Chat Fores

Vintage is quite the trend these days—from bags to clothes, and of course, décor and furniture.

I always like scouring flea markets in Belgium, El Rastro (in certain areas), and Porte de Clignancourt) in Paris. Porte de Clignancourt, also known as Les Puces, is more upscale when it comes to vintage pieces, spanning 7 hectares of treasures—from Rococo and Baroque to Art Deco and midcentury.

When visiting flea markets to source pieces for your home, it’s important to keep these valuable tips in mind so you don’t end up with the wrong finds or spend your life savings.

Vintage is quite the trend these days

Plan your visit ahead by checking an online map

Start where you need the most items. Large flea markets in Europe are often mapped out like street grids. The same concept applies to Bangkok’s Chatuchak market as well. I always check where reptiles are sold, since those are the areas I prefer to avoid.

The early bird gets the worm

Visit very early—right at opening time. It’s best to be early so you can get good deals and haggle. If the market is open on weekdays, I suggest visiting on those days instead of weekends.

Make sure to keep your cash and credit cards secure

Pickpockets can tell when you’re busy or mesmerized by the items on display. There’s no need to bring your passport, as these places typically don’t offer tax refunds.

Bring someone with you who has a poker face

It helps if your companion shows no reaction to items you find beautiful.

Bring a calculator

This allows you to punch in numbers while negotiating with the seller. It’s always good to be prepared ahead of the seller.

Have Google Translate on hand

Never let the seller see that you’re confused by the language.

Find a shipper

It’s best to have a shipper in mind before you go so you know your parameters. This will also help you gauge the size and weight of items you can buy.

Eat and hydrate

Eat well before you go to the flea markets and drink plenty of fluids. I’m often so overwhelmed by what I see that I forget to eat.

Vintage pieces

To give you a better idea, here are some vintage pieces worth checking out to upgrade your home.

Animal rugs/hides and antique rugs

These can make any monochromatic space more interesting. A full zebra hide is popular in lounge seating areas or even used as a coffee table surface. In Lenny Kravitz’s French home, a zebra hide coffee table serves as the centerpiece of his living room.

Boxes

Boxes that resemble jewelry pieces are quite a find. Lacquer, shellwork, or glass boxes make beautiful nightstand décor.

Antique mirrors with beautifully carved frames from any period make a great addition to a foyer.

Chests, dressers, consoles, and display cabinets

These pieces can stand on their own. There’s no need to clutter them or place them in busy areas. They can make any space feel fancy. I’m a big fan of unusual console tables with antique finishes or cracked stone.

Decorative lighting fixtures and chandeliers

I always look for unusual wall lights, which are easy to transport and pack. These can make a big difference on an otherwise plain wall. Chandeliers or pendant lights are also popular finds, especially those that have expensive newer versions in retail stores. Brass, crystal, and blown glass are particularly great finds.

Artwork and sculptural pieces

A uniquely shaped sculpture is something to look out for. It can instantly transform a space. Trust your first instinct and buy what genuinely speaks to you. Choose pieces you can imagine living with in your own space.

European ceramics, porcelain, and pottery

Maiolica, Dutch Faience/Delft, Meissen, and Nymphenburg are a few brands I can mention that I often manage to score at these markets. These pieces can be used for tabletops, coffee table arrangements, or even powder room counters.dinnerware and flatware

Limoges and Meissen are among my favorites when it comes to upgrading a dining set. I also look for good silverware for dinner parties—big pieces tend to feel more substantial as purchases.

I would get silver buckets (which can be used as an artsy urinal for my powder room), champagne bowls, serving platters, trays, and flatware. Brands such as Christofle, Puiforcat, and Tiffany & Co. can be found in these markets at steal prices.

Small tables are like little centerpieces when added to a living room.

Antique side tables

Small tables are like little centerpieces when added to a living room. They can add some whimsy to the space. These tables can be oddly shaped or can stand out through their color or finish.

This Assouline bookstore in Paris combines old world pieces with a very striking red wall paint finish making it look updated and fresh.

Vintage books

Vintage books—hardbound in beautiful leather and aged to a rich patina—are often found in these markets. You can build a collection over time.
