SWS: 83% of Pinoys want focus on home and family
More than 80 percent of Filipinos say a woman’s primary role is to look after her home and family, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released this week.
Conducted Nov. 24 to Nov. 30, the poll found that large shares of both men and women continue to agree with six statements about women’s roles in the family, including: “A man’s job is to earn money; a woman’s job is to look after the home and family.”
That statement posted 83 percent “agree” and 8 percent “disagree,” resulting in a net agreement score of +75, which SWS classifies as “extremely strong.” Nine percent were undecided.
Some 81 percent agreed with the view that “being a housewife is just as fulfilling as working for pay.” Eleven percent disagreed, while 7 percent were undecided, giving the statement a net agreement score of +71.
On the statement, “a job is all right, but what most women really want is a home and children,” 75 percent agreed, and 14 percent disagreed, resulting in an “extremely strong” net agreement score of +60. Ten percent were undecided.
Some 71 percent agreed with the statement that “a working mother can establish just as warm and secure a relationship with her children as a mother who does not work,” for a net agreement score of +53. Eighteen percent disagreed.
However, on whether “a preschool child is likely to suffer if his or her mother works,” 63 percent agreed and 27 percent disagreed, giving the statement a net agreement score of +37, which SWS classifies as “very strong.”
