Why Rita Daniela refused to stay silent—and turned pain into strength
Rita Daniela could have kept it to herself. But as someone who “can’t support anything untrue or doesn’t believe in,” she knew she could only remain silent for so long.
It wasn’t an easy decision; she knew she would invite scrutiny. But despite her initial misgivings, she filed a complaint for acts of lasciviousness against actor Archie Alemania—her former co-star in the TV series “Widow’s War”—in October 2024. This followed a September incident in which he allegedly made lewd remarks and initiated unwanted physical contact during a ride home.
And in October 2025, he was found guilty by the Bacoor Municipal Trial Court.
Daniela described the ruling then as justice not only for herself but also for “all the women and men who were abused, harassed, and molested but didn’t have the platform to fight for their rights.”
“I simply fought for something I felt was worth fighting for—my right as a woman,” she tells Lifestyle Inquirer. “I had the choice to take that experience either as a weakness or a strength. And I chose to turn it into strength.”

Speak out loud
The aftermath was just as difficult. Daniela had to retreat from the public eye and undergo therapy to help her process and cope with the trauma. Of course, it’s an incident no one would ever want to go through, but in hindsight, the singer-actress feels that everything happens for a reason.
When she finally felt ready to go out, she was surprised to see strangers—like in the mall—just approaching her out of the blue and saying, “Hey, Rita, thank you for doing that. That also happened to me, and I’m sorry it happened to you.”
Encounters like those leave Daniela feeling heartbroken and touched. On one hand, she can’t help but ask herself why such harmful and painful things keep happening. On the other hand, she’s comforted knowing that she isn’t alone and that her experience can give others hope.
“I hope to remind everyone who has experienced the same thing that it’s okay, we have a voice, and you can speak out loud. They’re not alone,” Daniela says.
Shared experiences
Through these shared experiences, she shows that celebrities, too, face struggles and challenges just like anyone else.
“In a way, malaki rin ang pasasalamat ko kay Lord kasi naka-touch ako ng mga tao,” she says. “Other people think that being a celebrity means everything should be perfect. They forget that we’re human, too. The things we go through can be similar to yours. We fall, and we need support and understanding, too.”
But as much as she wants to call it an advocacy, Daniela says she feels intimidated addressing an issue of this magnitude, especially since she admits that she doesn’t fully understand it. For now, she simply hopes to help in her own way and use her own voice to uplift and inspire others.
“I hope to share words that can encourage everyone,” she says, “and help them release all the stress and anxiety they have been keeping inside.”
Aside from that ordeal, the last couple of years included other challenges, like her transition to single motherhood and her mother’s battle with breast cancer, which, fortunately, went into remission last year. And while these events occurred during a period in her acting career when momentum was strong and new projects were coming her way, she refuses to call them setbacks.

Her bedrock
If anything, her experiences have only fueled her to begin a new chapter in showbiz. After more than 20 years with GMA 7, she’s now signed with Viva Artists Agency, opening the door to potential concerts, music recordings, and acting projects. She hopes to take on more roles that empower women, like how she championed body positivity with her iconic character Aubrey in “My Special Tatay.”
What a blessing it is, she says, to have the privilege of starting fresh with people in her life who loved and believed in her when she couldn’t bring herself to. But above all, it’s her faith in God that has remained her bedrock and voice of reason.
“If you don’t invest time in it, you can get swayed, because there are so many voices out there that can lead you astray. It’s important to know which voice to listen to and follow in your heart,” Daniela says. “Because at the end of the day, kahit na saang lugar ka pumunta, kapag maganda ang puso mo at pure ang intentions mo, you will always be okay.”
