First Gen to energize Robinsons malls in Visayas, Mindanao

First Gen Corp., a Lopez-led renewable energy producer, has sealed a green power supply deal with Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) to energize the Gokongwei firm’s shopping malls and a supermarket in the Visayas and Mindanao.

In a statement on Monday, First Gen said the 22-megawatt (MW) power supply agreement covers eight shopping malls and a supermarket across Cebu, Leyte, Zamboanga del Sur, Capiz and Antique.

The properties are shopping malls Robinsons Galleria Cebu, Robinsons Fuente Cebu, Robinsons Antique, Robinsons Roxas, Robinsons North Tacloban, Robinsons Pagadian, Robinsons Ormoc and Robinsons Tacloban; and Shopwise in San Nicolas, Cebu City.

First Gen said the committed capacity would be sourced from its Unified Leyte geothermal facilities for the Visayas property assets.

For Robinsons’ Mindanao mall, the power firm would tap the Mt. Apo geothermal plant in North Cotabato.

“Through this partnership with First Gen, RLC will be able to power its shopping malls with renewable geothermal energy even as our power needs peak,” said Mybelle Aragon-GoBio, president and CEO of RLC.

“This also helps reduce our exposure to electricity price volatility driven by global fuel markets, which is particularly important amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties,” she added.

The group owns and operates 57 shopping malls nationwide. It also has office buildings, residential developments, hotels, industrial and logistics facilities, as well as destination estates.

At present, Robinsons Land gets its 10 to 15 percent electricity needs from renewables.

“We are pleased to rekindle our partnership with Robinsons Land and help them achieve their goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in their total power consumption,” said First Gen president Giles Puno.

“Geothermal energy is not just renewable, it’s also indigenous and the only clean energy source that can run baseload capacity. It offers not just electricity cost optimization, but also price predictability,” Puno said.

First Gen is going big in its renewable expansion in the Philippines. Currently, it has 1,700 MW of capacity from 30 hydro, geothermal, solar and wind facilities.
