Malls reducing store hours to help save energy

Major shopping malls are reducing their business hours starting next Monday as their way of contributing to power conservation efforts following President Marcos’ declaration of a national energy emergency on March 24.

Beginning March 30, weekday store hours at SM Supermalls will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., while weekend hours will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. In all, 12 hours will be shaved off the operations per week.

Before the energy crisis, malls in Metro Manila usually admit shoppers from from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Renewables in the mix

“SM is proactively adapting to the current situation by adjusting our operating hours,” SM Supermalls president Steven Tan said.

“We remain committed to delivering elevated retail experiences for all Filipinos, supported by our increased use of renewable energy to power our malls,” Tan said.

The retail chain currently maintains an energy mix that includes more than 100 megawatts of solar power.
