Meet Karl Eldrew Yulo, the rising gymnastics star making a name for himself

Carl Martin Agustin

This time, outside his estranged relationship with his family, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo recently made the headlines following his guest appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.” When asked if he was supporting his siblings financially with their training, he explains that it wasn’t his responsibility to do so, as they’re all members of the Philippine national team.

“May iba’t ibang journey kami, and ’yon ’yong gusto kong ipaalam sa kanila—na hindi porke’t na-experience ko ’yong mga bagay na gano’n, ay ma-experience din nila ’yon,” adds Carlos.

From the outside looking in, this line of questioning portrayed the Yulo siblings as desperately in need, with Carlos refusing to assist under the guise of brotherly tough love—on top of his already-strained relationship with his mother. That may or may not be the case, but from what we’ve seen so far, at least from Karl Eldrew Yulo, he isn’t just the brother of the winningest Filipino Olympian of all time—but the next man up for Philippine artistic gymnastics.

Next man up

Since making his international competition debut at the 2023 Asian Junior Artistic Gymnastics Championship, Eldrew has won several medals at the junior level—including a gold at the 2024 Junior Asian Championships, a silver at the 2025 Junior Asian Championships, and two bronze medals at the 2025 Junior World Championships.

Last March, Eldrew even participated in the Antalya leg of the FIG Apparatus World Cup 2026 and secured his first senior division gold for floor exercise. And just a month later, at the Cairo World Cup, he won the bronze medal for floor exercise and horizontal bar, all while suffering from a right ankle injury.

Just after announcing his transition to the senior division at the tail end of 2025, the 18-year-old star has already made his presence known, cementing himself as a gymnast to watch out for. And following this string of impressive outings on the world stage, Eldrew also secured his slot at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships this October in the Netherlands.

The 18-year-old phenom is currently the world’s first in the floor exercise apparatus. He leads the pack with 64 points, followed by Belarus’ Yahor Sharamkou with 56 points, and Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi with 44 points.

His own man

“There’s so much pressure because [people think that when] your brother is a gold medalist in the Olympics, you should be too. But we have different likes, we have different paths. I’ll do my best now instead of pressuring myself,” shares Eldrew in an interview with World Gymnastics.

While being the brother of an all-time great comes with an expected level of pressure, Eldrew has proven unfazed by it. In fact, at this point in their careers, he already has the edge over the two-time Olympic gold medalist—given that Eldrew already has a senior gold to his name, while Carlos didn’t win his until his sophomore season.

Now, as the 18-year-old rising star prepares for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, he’ll also be getting ready to qualify for a slot in the 2028 Summer Olympics—and a shot to stand beside his brother on the biggest stage there is.

And if he plays his cards right, we won’t be just looking at a successful continuation of the Yulo dynasty, but a gymnastics superstar who’s come into his own.
