How to rework your wardrobe for summer

Colleen Cosme

Summer has a way of shifting everything. The pace feels different, the days stretch longer, and dressing becomes less about layering or structure and more about instinct. You reach for what feels right in the moment. Something breathable, something unfussy, something that makes sense in the heat without losing a sense of style.

I’ve always leaned toward a more minimal, mostly black wardrobe. It works, it’s reliable, and it rarely requires much thought. But lately, that approach feels slightly out of place against the brightness of the season.

So this summer, I’m making small adjustments. Not a complete shift, but enough to feel the difference. Pieces that are lighter, more relaxed, and a bit more open to color and texture.

Here’s what’s made its way into my wardrobe.

Light, breathable fabrics first

At a certain point, the heat makes anything restrictive feel unnecessary. Heavy fabrics tend to cling and hold warmth, making it difficult to stay comfortable throughout the day. It becomes instinctive to reach for materials that allow for airflow and movement.

Linen tends to be an easy choice. It feels light against the skin, allows for breathability, and still holds enough structure to look put together. Alongside it, 100 percent cotton offers a similar ease. Soft, breathable, and dependable even in prolonged heat.

Massimo Dutti approaches this well, with silhouettes that are minimal and classic, defined by clean lines and thoughtful fabric choices. Their linen pieces, in particular, strike a balance between form and comfort. For something more accessible, The Editor’s Market offers cotton options with a similar sensibility at a more approachable price point.

Uniqlo AIRism Bra Sleeveless Top

Comfortable underwear matters more than you think

What sits underneath an outfit plays a vital role, especially in warm weather. The wrong base layer can trap heat, hold moisture, and affect how everything feels as the day goes on.

Lightweight, breathable options make a noticeable difference. Uniqlo’s Airism line is designed with this in mind. The fabric is exceptionally light, almost unnoticeable once worn, with a smooth, seamless finish that sits cleanly under clothing without leaving lines. It also feels cool to the touch or, as we would say, “presko.” The material allows for airflow and helps keep things dry throughout the day, which becomes especially relevant in this kind of heat.

There is also a range to consider. High-waisted styles, lower cuts, and shorts-style options offer different levels of coverage without feeling heavy. Camisoles and tube tops can work as inner layers or on their own, with some styles featuring built-in bras for fewer layers overall.

Farm Rio red cherry satin mini scarf bag

The silk scarf is the most versatile accessory of the season

A silk scarf is one of those pieces that adapts easily to the moment. It can be styled in different ways without adding weight, whether worn as a top, tied at the waist, in your hair, or looped onto a bag. It also carries into the evening, when a light layer becomes useful. Draped over the shoulders, it adds just enough without feeling excessive.

What makes it especially suited to summer is the print. It offers an easy way to introduce color and pattern without committing to a full look. Something bolder and a little more expressive. Alemais leans into this with prints that feel distinctly summery. There’s a certain charm to them, bold without feeling excessive, the kind that can carry an entire look on its own.

Comfortable footwear for longer days

Flats tend to be a good choice this time of year. Summer usually means more time outside, more walking, and days that don’t always go as planned. You don’t really want to be dealing with uncomfortable shoes in the middle of all that.

Sneakers might be the obvious option, but they don’t always work with everything. Some outfits just feel off with them. Flats make more sense. They’re easier, a bit more refined, and still practical enough for everyday wear.

Vivaia has a wide range of styles, but what stands out is how they feel. There’s a level of softness and support that holds up throughout the day, with added cushioning and better arch support, so you start to appreciate it the longer you’re out. Even the materials feel light and breathable, which makes a difference in the heat.

Space Skull Pixie Florist Pill Earrings

Playful summer jewelry

I’ve always had a preference for keeping clothing relatively simple and letting accessories carry more of the personality. It keeps things easy, but never dull. With lighter fabrics and pared-back outfits, jewelry has more room to stand out. It doesn’t have to be precise or overly styled. A bit of looseness works better here.

There’s also a shift toward pieces that feel more natural. Beaded necklaces, stone earrings, natural gem pieces, organically shaped pearls. Nothing too perfect, nothing too polished. Just textures and shapes that feel a little more grounded and easy to wear in the heat.

Space Skull Pixie leans in that direction with pieces built around organic shapes. Genuine baroque and keshi pearls, each one slightly different, give that natural, less uniform feel.
