May movies worth going to the cinema for

Carl Martin Agustin

With prices still going up across the board, more and more people are becoming more judicious about going to the cinema. For some, it’s about only going for the “must-watch,” given that there are decent options on streaming platforms anyway.

But from Karl Urban transforming into the iconic Johnny Cage to sheep investigating Hugh Jackman’s passing, there are many May movies worth going to the theaters for.

“Mortal Kombat II”: May 6

“Mortal Kombat” features characters with all sorts of abilities, from those with godlike control over nature to cyborgs with futuristic technology. At the center of this upcoming live-action sequel is Johnny Cage, an American action star at the twilight of his career.

But how will he fare in a fight for the fate of the world? With Karl Urban at the helm, stylishly so.

“Mortal Kombat II” also stars Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film is directed by Simon McQuoid.

“The Sheep Detectives”: May 6

Central to most murder mysteries is a detective of great renown and skill, such as Hercule Poirot or Benoit Blanc. But for a case investigating a shepherd’s untimely passing? A herd of curious sheep is set to crack the case.

“The Sheep Detectives” stars Hugh Jackman, Nicholas Braun, Molly Gordon, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Patrick Stewart, and Bella Ramsey, and is directed by Kyle Balda.

“Almost Us”: May 6

Director Dan Villegas’ latest rom-com asks: Why do we sometimes reach for the distant when the one who loves us most is right here?

“Almost Us” stars Fyang Smith and JM Ibarra in their first solo movie. Joining them are Yuki Takahashi, Sam Samarita, JM Salvado, Baus Rufo, Che Ramos, and Lotlot Bustamante.

“Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard And Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)”: May 8

Following her stint as Justin Bieber’s one less lonely girl in his recent Coachella performance, fans can again see Billie Eilish, this time on the big screen. This upcoming concert film is directed by Academy Award® winners James Cameron and Billie Eilish, and will screen exclusively at SM Cinemas.

“Assassination Classroom the Movie: Our Time”: May 9

“Assassination Classroom” aired its last episode in 2016. In time for its 10th anniversary, this upcoming film will feature scenes left out of the original anime.

For those unfamiliar, the anime follows a section of students who are shunned for their lackluster performances in school. When an eccentric alien-like creature named Koro-sensei volunteers to teach their class, the students are given a mission to assassinate him for the safety of the world. But unbeknownst to them, their unlikely classroom environment teaches them more about life than they had expected.

“In The Grey”: May 13

Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, and Eiza González star as professional debt collectors you call when billions are stolen. If you liked “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” this is certainly one to watch out for. After all, from what we’ve seen, it has everything you’d expect from a Guy Ritchie film: the electric charisma between leads, the non-stop action, and more.

“Midnight Girls”: May 13

Money may not be the most important thing in the world, but when you’re providing for your loved ones, there’s no telling what you’d be willing to put yourself through. “Midnight Girls”—starring Sanya Lopez, Loisa Andalio, Jane Oineza, and Jodi Sta. Maria—follows four women who brave Japan’s red light district in search of love, livelihood, and purpose.

“Passenger” stars Jacob Scipio, Lou Llobell, and Melissa Leo, and is directed by André Øvredal.

“Obsession”: May 27

“Obsession” follows a hopeless romantic who uses a mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, unaware of the dire and sinister consequences of manipulating one’s desires. As they say, be careful what you wish for, and he learns it the hard way in this upcoming horror flick.

The film stars Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, and Andy Richter, and is directed by Curry Barker.

“Tayo Sa Wakas”: May 27

Although there isn’t much out there about the film yet (as of writing), Belle Mariano and Donny Pangilinan return together in “Tayo Sa Wakas” that’s sure to induce equal parts kilig and sawi—directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana.
