Leyte’s Kalanggaman Island on world’s list of best beaches
TACLOBAN CITY—Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte, has earned a spot on the 2026 list of the world’s 50 best beaches, drawing recognition from international travel professionals and seasoned travelers.
Karina Rosa Tiopes, Department of Tourism director for Eastern Visayas, described the inclusion of Kalanggaman as a “proud and happy moment” for Leyte and the region.
Tiopes noted that the island’s natural beauty, which has long been appreciated by local travelers, is now gaining global attention.
International appeal
She told the Inquirer that the “World’s 50 Best Beaches” list is curated by travel experts who personally visit and evaluate destinations, making the recognition highly credible.
Tiopes said the selection was based on firsthand experience, with criteria including a beach’s uniqueness, natural condition, tranquility, presence of marine life and lack of overcrowding.
She added that being included alongside globally known destinations, including Palawan’s Entalula Beach, which topped the list, highlights the growing international appeal of Philippine beach destinations. Kalanggaman is 25th on the list.
Responsibility
According to Tiopes, the recognition is expected to boost tourism in Palompon and nearby areas, as the list is widely followed and featured in international media, potentially attracting more visitors.
However, she emphasized that the distinction also brings responsibility.
Tiopes underscored the need to sustain the island’s clean, peaceful and natural state through proper visitor management, adequate facilities and environmental protection.
She called on local governments, communities and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that increased tourism does not compromise the island’s condition.
“Our goal is not only to welcome more visitors, but to make sure that every visit respects the island, supports the local community, and helps preserve its beauty for future generations,” Tiopes said.
Kalanggaman Island is known for its white sandbars, crystal-clear waters and relatively untouched ecosystem.
It has emerged as one of Leyte’s top tourist destinations, attracting both local and foreign visitors seeking a serene beach experience.
