PH eyes lab for bolstering dairy sector
The Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries (PCAF) and the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) are collaborating on the development of a facility aimed at bolstering the Philippine dairy industry.
Representatives from PCAF, PCC and Texas-based firm STgenetics recently met to discuss the planned sex-sorted semen processing facility for dairy animals. They tackled technical requirements, operational arrangements and potential areas for collaboration.
“The initiative is expected to contribute to faster dairy herd expansion, improved genetic quality of dairy animals and stronger local breed development through the increased use of sex-sorted semen from locally produced dairy buffaloes,” PCAF said.
The planned facility will be equipped with sperm-sorting technology from STgenetics, which can increase the likelihood of producing female dairy offspring, accelerate dairy herd expansion and support local breed development.
The project is part of the Intensified Community-Based Dairy Enterprise Development jointly implemented by the National Dairy Administration and the PCC.
It is backed by the United States Public Law 480 Program, which governs Washington’s distribution of foreign food aid. PCAF serves as the fund manager for this initiative.
The Philippines’ dairy production increased by 6.8 percent to 11.79 million liters in the first quarter of 2026, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed.
In terms of value, dairy output climbed by 10 percent to P777.56 million during the January to March quarter.
