DepEd reiterates ban on cell phones during class
The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday reminded schools to strictly enforce the ban on the use of portable electronic devices like cell phones among students and school personnel during class hours, except when accessing educational materials and in emergencies.
In a June 30 memorandum made public on July 1, the DepEd called anew for the strict implementation of and compliance with its guidelines on the safe and responsible use of the internet and related devices. It said the ban also covers activities such as using social media, playing online games, creating content and vlogging.
Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian issued a similar call on Wednesday amid school safety concerns following the recent shooting threat at a Batangas public school and a foiled school attack in Laguna in February.
Gatchalian said that aside from ensuring the safety of students, the ban will also help them focus on their studies while reducing distractions caused by gadget use.
