BIZ BUZZ: Taxpayers, beware
As if stolen taxes weren’t painful enough already, taxpayers now have to worry about their personal information falling into the wrong hands, too.
Scammers are getting creative, this time giving taxpayers a fake tax portal to worry about.
The website orus.ph mimics the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s Online Registration and Update System (ORUS), potentially luring visitors into exposing their personal and tax information through suspicious pop-ups and prompts.
But there’s a dead giveaway: it’s missing “.gov” from its web address.
The real deal always has those three extra letters and a dot, making the legitimate portal orus.bir.gov.ph.
The BIR isn’t taking any chances, telling taxpayers in an advisory to stay away from the fake portal and resist the urge to click.
It warned against entering personal details or granting permissions to suspicious prompts, and urged the public to report online impostors.
A word to the wise: Not everything that looks official deserves one’s trust.
