Zenith introduces the Defy Skyline Tourbillon
In horology, the tourbillon mechanism has always epitomized the pinnacle of fine watchmaking, showcasing the technical mastery of the manufacture and the ingenuity of skilled artisans. Originating in the late 18th century to mitigate the impact of gravity on timekeeping precision, Zenith has reimagined this mechanism with a contemporary flair, underscoring the Manufacture’s unparalleled proficiency in high-frequency precision across diverse movement complexities. This modern interpretation is seamlessly integrated into the distinctive design ethos of the Defy collection, ensuring suitability for everyday wear in any setting. Like all El Primero calibers, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon’s movement operates at an impressive high-frequency rate of 5Hz (36,000 VpH), ensuring exceptional chronometric performance and resilience to shocks.
Encased within a strikingly faceted and geometric 41mm case, accompanied by a matching bracelet available in either stainless steel or black ceramic, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon seamlessly marries the bold architectural aesthetics of the Defy Skyline collection with the mesmerizing mechanical spectacle of a tourbillon mechanism.
At the heart of the watch lies its captivating kinetic element, visible through an aperture on the lower dial. Mounted on a meticulously polished bridge with sharp angles, the tourbillon cage assumes the form of an open four-pointed star, echoing the futuristic lines found in other Defy references featuring tourbillon complications. Continuously revolving around its axis, the tourbillon completes a full rotation every 60 seconds. With a water-resistance rating of 10ATM (100 meters), the case underscores the timepiece’s resilience in various conditions.
The signature sunray-patterned metallic dial has been reimagined, accentuating the presence of the high-frequency tourbillon. Whether presented in blue for the steel variant or black for the ceramic model, the mosaic of engraved four-pointed stars emanates from the tourbillon at 6 o’clock, expanding outward toward the dial’s periphery. Luminescent applied markers and hands provide striking contrast to the dial, featuring rhodium-plated indices for the blue dial and rose gold-plated indices for the black dial.
Driving this exquisite timepiece is the innovative El Primero 3630 automatic high-frequency manufacture caliber, boasting a power reserve of 60 hours. Mirroring the intricate decoration of the dial-side, the côtes de Genève stripes on the bridges are arranged in a sunray pattern, seemingly emanating from the tourbillon. The open star-shaped rotor offers a captivating view of the contemporary movement architecture.
Like its Defy Skyline counterparts, the Defy Skyline Tourbillon is presented on a stainless steel or black ceramic bracelet, accompanied by a secondary strap in blue or black rubber with a folding clasp, easily interchangeable using the case back’s quick strap-change mechanism, requiring no tools.
