Talk of the Town: Traffic czar proposal may work

Comments on “Traffic czar proposal may work,” (Editorial, 3/25/24)via www.inquirer.net:

Metro Manila’s long-term problem is the nonexistence of what we call the last mile or kilometer for people [using] publictransit which is clearly the solution.

Building overhead highways is good but does not address the last mile concept which means a commuter should be within a mile or kilometer from a public transit station and his destination should be within a mile or kilometer from his destination. This concept is extremely tied in with wide pedestrian walkways and building density housing within the public transit domain.

Create alternate rush hour, one-way lanes coming and going; on busy streets, rush hour no left turns; some areas traffic lights must be go and left turn to vacate the whole lane; stop-and-go jeepney system is a big contributor to obstruction. MMDA suffers from severe lack of parallel roads.

The only way to fix the traffic is to get help from professionals abroad. Local coconut ideas will not do anything to ease the traffic.
