Two leading design and construction companies, Makati Development Corp. (MDC) and Japan’s Takenaka Corp., have finalized an agreement to establish MDTK Corp. The ceremonial launch held last March 21 was attended by top executives from Ayala Corp., Ayala Land, Inc., MDC, and Takenaka.

“The MDC community looks forward to collaborating with Takenaka to exchange best design and construction practices and technologies that will benefit both our organizations, the construction industry, and most importantly, the people that we serve. Through MDTK, we look forward to using our combined expertise, learnings, and resources to enhance land and enrich the lives of Filipinos,” said MDC president and CEO Dante M. Abando, who will also serve as MDTK chair.

“Our company has long held a dream of expanding our operations in the Philippines, focusing on the potential of the country’s future and the trust built on the historical exchange of nationalities and cultures between the two nations. With shared values and trust, establishing a joint venture with MDC from the Ayala Group, known for their innovative urban development projects in Makati, BGC, and nationwide, is a significant honor and we are grateful for it,” said Shoichiro Shibuta, executive managing officer of Takenaka Overseas Construction Business.

MDC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ayala Land, is the leading engineering, procurement, construction, and construction management company in the Philippines. An ISO-certified company and a Quadruple A Platinum-licensed contractor in the Philippines, MDC’s 50-year track record spans more than 800 completed projects in the commercial, residential, industrial, land development, and infrastructure sectors.

Meanwhile, the Osaka-headquartered Takenaka is one of the five major general contractors in Japan, providing architectural, engineering, and construction services. It has completed over 5,400 projects globally. In the Philippines, it took part in the construction of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 and the Bacolod-Silay Airport early in the 2000s. Through Takenaka Civil Engineering and Construction, it is also engaged in constructing the Metro Manila Subway and the Davao City Bypass projects.

The joint venture brings together more than 400 years of extensive architecture, engineering, and construction experience and expertise to the country. It signals a significant milestone that will open up opportunities for the two companies to take on complex design and construction projects, and introduce new technologies and methodologies that will benefit the Philippine construction industry and the Filipino people.
