2 Chinese firms to build MGEN’s Toledo BESS

Meralco PowerGen Corp. (MGen) has tapped two Chinese contractors for the first phase of its 49-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Toledo, Cebu.

In a talk with media on Thursday, company officials said that MGen signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) and SUMEC Complete Equipment and Engineering Co., Ltd. (SUMEC).

“Our signing marks another important step in our efforts to strengthen the country’s energy system. With CATL and SUMEC as our partners, the Toledo BESS project will take shape with the benefit of proven expertise and world-class technology,” MGen president and CEO Emmanuel Rubio said.

CATL would provide advanced battery technologies while SUMEC would focus on project execution.

Construction is slated to begin within this month.

The first phase, which includes an initial 25 MW, is eyed for completion by the second quarter of next year.
