200-MW wind park to rise in Cavite

Maragondon Wind Energy Corp. plans to spend about P10.58 billion to build a 200-megawatt (MW) wind park in Cavite province.
Based on documents submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the company has secured a service contract from the Department of Energy (DOE) to pursue its project.
Targeted to be developed in two phases, with up to 100 MW of capacity each, the project will be located in Maragondon, covering seven barangays.
A total of 36 wind turbine generators would be deployed. Each unit is capable of generating up to 9 MW of capacity.
Substations would also be built for the project’s seamless connection to the country’s power grid.
The group hopes to start construction works by next year. Commercial operations are slated for December 2028.
“The project aims to help the Philippines transition into renewable energy through the installation of an onshore wind power facility to produce additional renewable energy capacity for the Luzon grid in support of the Philippine Energy Plan,” the firm said.
Citing government data, the company said Luzon’s projected power demand could reach 48,014 MW by 2050 amid its increasing economic activities.
Of the renewable energy sources, solar and wind technology are the ones seen to help address the rising electricity demand.
“This substantial role for wind power makes projects such as the Maragondon Wind Power Project absolutely crucial for meeting Luzon’s escalating energy demands,” it said.
Maragondon Wind Energy also vowed to comply with environmental, social and governance standards. It has also committed to actively consult with local stakeholders during all project phases.
The government has long been calling on the private players to level up their game in the renewable energy space as the Philippines seeks to cut its reliance on coal.
By 2030, the Marcos administration hopes the share of renewable energy in the electricity generation mix will go up to 35 percent from the current 22 percent.
To back this, the DOE has been conducting green energy auctions to attract more projects in the market.
