A life of service

On March 20 at 10 a.m., I donned the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Reserved Military Force assigned to the Judge Advocate General Service (JAGS). This is a defining moment in my journey, not just in terms of personal achievement, but also in my commitment to service and leadership. I accept this rank with a renewed sense of purpose, reflecting on the path that has led me here.
My decision to serve was shaped by the values instilled in me over the years, by my mentors who guided me, and by a deep belief in my duty as a citizen of this country that grew stronger as I aged.
However, my sense of service extends beyond the military. Patriotism, to me, is not just about defending our borders or the wearing of uniforms. It is about ensuring that every citizen, especially those that are most vulnerable, is given the opportunity to have a decent quality of life. This is why our advocacy at the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) against child stunting and malnutrition must be sustained and prioritized. A strong nation is built on the health and well-being of its people.
Today, as I embrace this rank, I want to share why I joined the military, what drove me to this path, and how I intend to shape the future.
Joining the military
The military is a sacred commitment to our nation and a responsibility to uphold its ideals. It represents the highest form of patriotism, one that goes beyond words and translates into action.
I joined the military because I believe in service. I wanted to contribute to something bigger than personal ambition, and to be part of a team bound by trust and shared purpose.
Patriotism is about having honor, courage and commitment. It is protecting not just our land, but also the rights, freedoms and the future of our people. When I took my oath, I made a promise to uphold these principles.
What drove me to this path
Every journey has defining moments, experiences and influences. For me, I felt a deep sense of purpose. The path I chose was driven by the desire to be part of something that not only preserves our country but also forms our future.
I was motivated by the pursuit of growth. The military does not just build soldiers; it builds leaders, critical thinkers and individuals who thrive well in tough situations. I sought an environment that challenges me daily, demands excellence, and teaches lessons through real-world experiences.
There were also the people who inspired me to drive into this path; leaders, mentors and veterans whose dedication and resilience defined what it means to serve.
Finally, I understood that service is not about personal aspirations alone, it is about being there for others. We don’t just serve as individuals. We serve as a team by supporting, protecting and pushing each other to be better. That kind of unity is rare, and I knew I wanted to be part of it.
What I expect to shape
Now that I have taken this step, my journey does not end here. With this rank comes greater responsibility, and with that responsibility comes the expectation to lead and inspire.
First and foremost, I expect to shape myself. There will be challenges, and I will embrace them because these adversities will sharpen my character. Every hardship and every lesson I will learn will make me a better leader, a better soldier and a better person.
Beyond personal growth, I expect to shape those around me. I want to create an environment where my peers and subordinates feel empowered and driven to push beyond their limits. The success of this country is not determined by one individual only but by the collective strength of its citizens.
I also recognize that the military will always be evolving. I have the duty to contribute to that progress and I want to help build a military that not only honors tradition but also adapts, innovates and leads with empathy.
Beyond the military, I will continue to advocate for national progress. Serving my country doesn’t stop when I take off my uniform. Whether through my advocacies or legal work, I will keep pushing for the policies and initiatives that will strengthen our nation from within.
End note
Today, I wear my rank as a reminder of the commitment I have made. It is a responsibility, a trust placed upon me, and an expectation to serve with courage and dedication.
There will always be challenges and moments that will test every ounce of strength within me, but I am ready to face them, grow from them and emerge stronger for those I serve alongside.
This is a commitment to uphold my honor, to lead with purpose and to leave a legacy that inspires others to serve with the same dedication. I embrace this responsibility, knowing that every step I take is part of a greater mission that demands nothing less than my best.
I will serve because I love my country. I will serve because I believe in our future. I will serve because patriotism is not just a word, but it is a duty.
And if you, too, feel the call to serve—join me. Let us build a legacy worth remembering.
