Aboitiz retains crown as top power player in PH

Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV) maintained its status as the country’s top power generator, accounting for 24.3 percent of national grid capacity, the latest government data showed.

Based on a document as of June, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said AEV’s market share of the national grid was equivalent to 6,850 megawatts (MW). It dominated the Luzon grid with a 27.53 percent share, or 5,621 MW.

AEV was the only group that logged double-digit market share across the three main grids.

Its power generation arm, Aboitiz Power, has interests in both renewable and nonrenewable generation plants.

San Miguel Corp. came second with a market share of 19.62 percent, translating to a 5,533 MW contribution to the grid system.

Its power generation unit, San Miguel Global Power Holdings Corp., has about 5,710 MW of combined capacity.

The company also has an aggressive project pipeline, including the expansion of its Masinloc coal plant, investments in more battery energy storage systems and the deployment of 2.5 gigawatts of solar projects by 2029.

Lopez-led First Gen Corp., a leading renewable energy producer, got the third spot with 10.74 percent market share or 3,028 MW.

Ayala Corp., which backs listed renewable energy developer ACEN Corp., secured the fourth spot with 6.91 percent market share, or 1,948 MW of the grid network.

Tycoon Manuel Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Co. completed the list, falling just an inch from the higher spot, with a market share of 6.7 percent. This translates to 1,889 MW of power supplied to the grid.

Under the law, power generation groups are not allowed to own, operate or control over 30 percent of the installed generating capacity of a grid and no more than 25 percent of the national installed generating capacity.

For 2026, the ERC said the maximum installed generating capacity of the national grid is 28,197.05 MW, down from a year ago’s 28,390.07 MW.

Meanwhile, ERC Chair Francis Saturnino Juan said they would issue show-cause orders to Visayas plants that remain offline by the end of the year.

Since May, the Visayas grid has been placed under numerous yellow alerts, with a few times under red alert, due to tight power supply.
