ACEN tops green energy option scheme

ACEN came to the forefront as a dominant player in the government’s green energy option program (GEOP).
The Ayala-led energy firm cornered a 49-percent market share, according to the latest data.
Based on a report from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), ACEN was the “primary renewable energy (RE) supplier” for October 2024 under GEOP.
The program allows consumers to buy electricity from RE facilities, if their monthly average peak demand is at least 100 kilowatts.
The total number of GEOP end-users with active supply contracts during the period reached 484.
Total peak demand was pegged at 169.45 megawatts (MW).
Most of the GEOP end-users, or a total of 394, were in Luzon.
The remaining 90 end-users were in the Visayas.
ACEN, through its retail electricity supply business ACEN RES, had the highest number of GEOP end-users at 239.
ACEN customers represent a demand of 83.09 MW.
Green Core Geothermal Inc. of Lopez family’s First Gen came second. It secured 18.67 MW in supply contracts with 54 end-users.
Other top players included Advent Energy of Aboitiz Power, Citicore Renewable Energy Corp. and Manila Electric Co.’s MPower.
The government launched GEOP to encourage the use of clean energy sources. The Philippines has a commitment to cut down its reliance on fossil fuels.
Currently, coal continues to dominate the Philippines’ electricity mix while RE accounts 22 percent.
By 2030, the government hopes clean energy’s share in the power generation mix will improve to 35 percent.
