Agribiz firm taps First Gen for clean energy

The Philippine unit of multinational agribusiness group Wilmar International Ltd. is making a shift to renewable energy through a supply deal with Lopez-led First Gen Corp.

In a statement, First Gen said it had signed a partnership with Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc. late last month.

The agreement would cover Wilmar’s processing facility in Gingoog, Misamis Oriental. This includes equipment for copra crushing, processing and refining of edible oils.

First Gen said the electricity would be sourced from the Mt. Apo geothermal power plant in Cotabato.

Green baseload

Carlo Vega, chief customer engagement officer of First Gen, said that geothermal power is the only renewable energy source that has baseload capability, which can support the electricity demand of industries, while ensuring a reduction in its carbon footprint.

“Since energy is typically one of the major sources of operational emissions, shifting to RE (renewable energy) offers a practical, measurable way to reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term business continuity and cost stability,” added David Lim, chief financial officer of Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc.

Last week, First Gen also said it had secured a renewable energy supply deal with luxury property developer Shang Properties Inc. to energize its residential condominium in Makati City.

Valero Grand Suites by Swiss-Belhotel, a 271-room upscale hotel in Makati City’s central business district, also tapped First Gen.
