AirAsia Philippines continues to fly through blue skies, with heavier passenger volume and more flights reported in the first half.

In its latest performance report, parent company Capital A Berhad announced the local unit of the airline operator flew a total of 3.58 million passengers during the period, up 9 percent.

The second quarter particularly was the busiest, with more passengers flying to summer getaway destinations, as volume reached 1.8 million, or 12 percent up.

AirAsia Philippines operated 21,338 flights in total, an increase of 7 percent from the previous year.

Passenger load factor as of June stood at 93 percent, up by 2 percentage points. Passenger load factor measures the percentage of available seating capacity in an aircraft. A higher figure means higher occupancy or more tickets sold.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the summer season sparked travel demand as evidenced by the recent increase in airline passenger volume, most of which is accounted for by Asia Pacific.

Airlines saw a 27-percent uptick in passenger volume in the region, while passenger load factor improved by 0.6 percentage point to 81.6 percent.

While the aviation sector is poised for further growth due to busier operations, IATA had warned of the impact of parts shortages and delivery on the availability of planes.

This global concern has resulted in jets being parked for a longer period, prompting flight delays and cancellations. AirAsia Philippines currently operates 16 aircraft, which it plans to increase to 25 by the end of the year.
